Via dell'Archiginnasio 2

Type: Archaeology, History

The Civic Archaeological Museum of Bologna is located in the heart of the city, inside Palazzo Galvani, close to Piazza Maggiore and the Church of San Petronio. The first construction of this building dated back to the XV century. Modifications and renovations continued up to 1881, when it was definitively opened to the public as a Museum.

The Collections of the Civic Archaeological Museum are increased starting from its first group consisting of University of Bologna Collections (Aldrovandi, Cospi, Marsili), then enriched with the exceptional Collection of the Bolognese painter Pelagio Pelagi achieved in 1861. Since then it began the period of urban excavations, opened in 1869 with the discovery of Etruscan tombs nearby the Certosa, which was followed by important recoveries in the city and in the surrounding territory.

The Museum became the place assigned to collect recovered materials during excavations, which were exposed in the rooms beside the Archiginnasio, in occasion of the V Congress of Anthropology and Prehistoric Archaeology in 1871. In 1881 the Museum was first opened in its site of Palazzo Galvani, just enlarged and renewed with the exhibition of traditional Collections and the most recent discoveries. At the moment the Museum boasts Collections consisting of 200,000 works divided into several sections, which partially still maintain original exhibition criteria.
